Block Fill Calculator

How much grout does that block wall actually swallow?

A grouted block wall is hollow until the truck arrives — and grout volumes surprise everyone. One 8×8×16 block holds about 0.24 cubic feet with both cells filled; a full wall runs roughly one cubic yard per 112 blocks. This calculator converts wall dimensions to grout yards with a waste allowance, full-fill or rebar-cells-only.

Why people use this

Masons and owner-builders use this because grout volume is the number everyone underestimates — a "small" 40-foot wall swallows almost two cubic yards. Ordering right means no cold joint while the second truck is dispatched.

How it works

  1. Enter wall length and height.
  2. Pick all cells (full grout) or every other cell (rebar cells only).
  3. Read the cubic yards with 10% waste, the block count, and the cost.

Common questions

How much grout per 100 blocks?

Fully grouted 8-inch blocks: about 0.9 cubic yards per 100 blocks (0.24 cu ft per block × 100 ÷ 27). Filling only the rebar cells halves it. Always add 10% for spillage and pump priming.

Does rebar go in before or after the grout?

Before — vertical bars are placed in the cells as the wall is laid, then grout is poured around them in lifts of about 4–5 feet and consolidated. Grouting first and pushing bars in traps air and creates hidden voids.
