Final Grade Calculator

The most-Googled question of every December and May.

Every semester ends with the same arithmetic panic: what do I need on the final? This calculator answers it exactly — current grade, the final's weight in the syllabus, and your target produce the required score. It also tells you the two honest edge cases: when the grade you want is mathematically impossible, and when you have already locked it in.

Why people use this

The most-Googled student question every December and May: "what do I need on the final?" Students use it to triage finals week — which course needs an all-nighter and which grade is already locked. Knowing a target is impossible is valuable too: it redirects the study time.

How it works

  1. Enter your current grade in the course (before the final).
  2. Enter the final exam's weight from the syllabus (commonly 20–40%).
  3. Enter the overall grade you want in the course.
  4. The calculator solves: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

Common questions

What if my needed score is over 100%?

Then the target is mathematically out of reach on the final alone — the honest answer this calculator gives you. Options: extra credit, a lower target (run it again), or talking to the professor now rather than after the exam.

What if it says I need a negative score?

Congratulations — your target is locked in even if you score zero. That information is valuable too: it tells you which of your finals deserves your study time and which is already safe.

Does this work for weighted categories?

It works when your current grade is already computed as a single number. If your course uses weighted categories (homework 20%, tests 40%…), compute the current standing first — your LMS usually shows it — then use this for the final.
