Order the right pallet count the first time — sod doesn't wait.
Sod is sold by the roll and the pallet, priced by the square foot, and dead within a day of delivery if it sits. That makes the order quantity the whole job: too little and you pay a second delivery for scraps, too much and it cooks on the pallet. This calculator adds the right waste factor for your yard shape and converts to rolls and pallets in your region's standard sizes.
Landscapers use it to quote sod installs on the spot — area, waste factor, pallet count, done in front of the client. Homeowners use it because sod dies on the pallet in a day: ordering short means a second delivery of scraps, ordering long means cooked grass you paid for.
With the typical 10% waste factor you order 2,200 sq ft. At 450 sq ft per pallet that is 4.9 pallets — round up to 5. At a 500 sq ft pallet it is 4.4, so 5 as well (or 4 full pallets plus a few rolls if the farm splits).
Within 12–24 hours in warm weather — sod stacked on a pallet heats from the inside and dies. In cool weather you may get 48 hours. Schedule delivery for the morning you install, and water each section within 30 minutes of laying it.
Material typically runs $0.35–0.80 per square foot depending on grass variety — Bermuda and Fescue at the low end, Zoysia and St. Augustine at the high end. Delivery and professional installation typically add another 20–40%.
