Tile Calculator

Tiles, thinset, grout — order once, order right.

Tile orders fail on waste: a straight grid loses about 10% to cuts, a diagonal or herringbone layout 15%. This calculator applies the right waste factor to your floor area and tile size, then adds the materials everyone forgets — 50-lb thinset bags and grout pounds — so one trip covers the whole job.

Why people use this

DIY tilers use it because the three purchases (tile, thinset, grout) live in different aisles with different coverage math. The diagonal-layout waste toggle exists because that is the exact mistake that strands a Saturday project half-tiled.

How it works

  1. Enter floor length and width.
  2. Pick the tile size and layout — diagonal and herringbone add 15% waste instead of 10%.
  3. Read the tile count (rounded up), thinset bags at ~95 sq ft per 50-lb bag, and grout at ~¼ lb per sq ft.
  4. Open the cost section for a materials-plus-labor estimate; keep 2–3 spare tiles for future repairs.

Common questions

How many 12×12 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?

Each 12×12 tile covers exactly 1 sq ft. With 10% cutting waste: 110 tiles for a straight layout, 115 for diagonal. Buy the full box overage — dye lots vary between batches.

How much thinset do I need per 100 square feet?

Roughly one 50-lb bag per 95 sq ft with a ¼-inch square-notch trowel — so 2 bags for 100 sq ft. Large-format tile (24×24) needs a ½-inch trowel and uses about twice as much.
