Calculators for Roofers & Roofing Contractors

A roofing bid lives or dies on the square count and the pitch factor — measure the footprint, apply the slope multiplier, and the shingles, underlayment, and labor all follow. These calculators do the geometry instantly so the number you hand the homeowner is the number the supplier sees.

The questions these tools answer

Common questions

How do I convert a roof footprint to squares?

Footprint area × the pitch factor: 1.054 for 4/12, 1.118 for 6/12, 1.414 for 12/12 — the same √(1 + (pitch/12)²) multiplier as rafter math. A 2,000 sq ft footprint at 6/12 is about 2,236 sq ft of roof — 22.4 squares, plus 10% waste for hips and valleys. The roofing calculator applies the factor and waste so the order is right.

What size gutters does a roof need?

It depends on the drainage area and your local rainfall intensity: 5-inch K-style handles most homes up to roughly 5,500 sq ft of drainage area; steep roofs and heavy-rain regions push you to 6-inch. The gutter calculator sizes it from the roof's actual drainage area, not a guess.

Why do roofing bids fail on margin?

Because markup and margin get swapped: a 40% markup on a $7,000 job is a $9,800 price — only 29% margin after tear-off disposal, underlayment, and the dump fees people forget to line-item. The bid sheet calculator forces every cost into the open before the price is set.
